The Pilipino Academic Student Services* (PASS) cordially invites you, and any guest[s] you wish to bring, to the Friends of PASS Banquet.

This is a fundraising banquet in hopes to establish a stronger connection with Pilipino faculty, staff, graduate students, and alumni with the Pilipino undergraduates at Cal. This banquet will not only serve as an excellent way to expand your networks, see familiar and new faces but will also benefit the Friends of PASS Program.

The Friends of PASS program seeks to bring recent UC Berkeley admits to the Senior Weekend program held on April 10-12, 2008. Through your support of the Friends of PASS Program, we will be able to bring more high school students who may not otherwise be eligible to attend Senior Weekend, and thus not have an amazing experience at Berkeley that students enjoy.

There will be a sliding scale donation of $15-$20. But no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please RSVP email (ad.retention@gmail.com) with your name, major[s]/minor[s] you graduated with, and year of graduation. We hope to see you there for a great night of food, entertainment, and connections!

2nd Annual PAAC Tailgate - Cal vs U$C, November 10th, 12:30pm-4pm, Maxwell Field Parking Lot (North entrance to Memorial Stadium, same location as last year)

Unlimited drinks (beer, sangria) - $5 students, $10 alums

$5 mixed plates (bbq sticks, pancit, lumpia, and rice)

DeCadence will be performing at 3pm

The Cal Football team will enter the stadium in front of the tailgate party.

The #2 Golden Bears football team play the Oregon State Beavers at Memorial Stadium this Saturday, October 13th at 4pm. If you are planning to go to the game or even just be near campus, be sure to pass through Sproul and buy some filipino food and chat with some Cal students.

PAA and PASAE will be selling food at a booth on Sproul along with several campus groups and they would love to meet you and they appreciate your support.

On August 4, 1977, more than 50 elderly Asian immigrants, most from the Philippines, were evicted from the 10x10-foot rooms in the International Hotel located on the edge of downtown San Francisco in Manilatown. The evictions were carried out to make way for an office tower, but instead they gave birth to a defiant grassroots movement for affordable housing.

100 percent of all donations will go to Manilatown Heritage Foundation, which promotes social and economic justice for Filipinos in America by preserving our history, advocating for equal access, and advancing our arts and culture.

The (H)API Hour (hapihour.org) brings together supporters of Asian American Pacific Islander communities through happy hours that raise funds for, and awareness of, nonprofit organizations serving AAPIs in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.

This pan-Asian restaurant doesn't just have boundary issues; it celebrates them in its food and its dining room. The latter, decorated with Balinese art and artifacts, is split into a bar and, against the opposite wall, a beige banquette lined with two-tops. In between, a few tables serve as an ad-hoc teahouse (well into dinnertime, you'll see people sitting there, hunched over their MacBooks). At 10 p.m. sharp, the lights dim, a DJ starts spinning and voila, it's a nightclub.

PAAC 20th Anniversary Celebration - Thank you!

Thank you to all for making this celebration an incredible event. Words cannot even begin to express how grateful I am to all the inspirational speakers (Al Bito - founder of PAAC, Nad Permaul - former CAA President, Anatalio Ubalde - keynote), entertainers (LPG - practically had the whole crowd floored, PCN - reminded us all of our performing days in Zellerbach), the MC (Liz thanks for keeping the whole room captivated all night), all the former PAAC presidents who paved the way, Virg (thanks for selling the most tickets), the event committee (Norina especially for the great program and decorations, Kim, Fred, Charity, Lloyd, Jesse, and Virg), and the student volunteers (the event would not have run so smoothly w/o your help).

Also, thank you all who generously donated money towards Senior Weekend. The alumni/student interaction can still continue -- on Sat., Apr 21 from 9am-12pm, PASS is hosting a brunch w/ prospective Cal students before Cal Day festivities. DEADLINES APPROACHING FOR APAICS 2007 SUMMER INTERNSHIP AND 2007-2008 FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS

Washington, D.C. The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) is currently accepting applications for its 2007 Summer Internship and 2007-2008 Fellowship Programs.

Each year, APAICS invites college students to apply for its Summer Internship Program in Washington, D.C. Interns are placed in Congressional offices, federal agencies, and non-profit organizations to obtain a first-hand learning experience in American politics. Through a series of seminars, they learn about national Asian Pacific Islander American advocacy organizations and network with peers from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF).

This year, the internship will last from June 4 to July 27, 2007. Those attending continental U.S. schools will receive a total stipend of $2,500. Interns attending Hawaii schools, or who live in Hawaii, will receive a total stipend of $3,000 to cover additional transportation costs. All application materials, including application form, resume, transcript, cover letter, writing sample and two letters of recommendation, must be submitted by January 31, 2007.

The three 2007-2008 Fellowship Programs are the George Aratani Foundation/Daniel K. Inouye Fellowship Program, the Anheuser-Busch/Frank Horton Fellowship Program, and the Sodexho Health Policy Fellowship. Applications for these programs must be postmarked by Wednesday, February 28, 2007. There will be no extension deadline.

Maya Yamazaki and Gloria Chan are the current fellows for the George Aratani Foundation/Daniel K. Inouye Fellowship Program and the Anheuser-Busch/Frank Horton Fellowship Program, respectively. Ms. Yamazaki has been placed in the Office of Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-Guam), and Ms. Chan is with the Office of Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA).

Happy Holidays everyone! Let's start out the New Year with a bang!

PAAC is co-sponsoring a January mixer/happy hour with YFPA, the Young Filipino Professional Association on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 from 6:00pm-9:00pm.

PAAC Happy Hour in SF - Thurs, Dec 7th

PAAC is having a fall mixer in San Francisco on Thursday, December 7th at Sugar Lounge in Hayes Valley.

Sugar Lounge is located at Hayes St & Franklin and is closest to the Civic Center Bart station or just off the 21 Muni Bus line. There are several restaurants to grab dinner at afterwards, including deep dish pizza, pomme frites, or even Vietnamese food in the nearby Tenderloin.

Sugar Lounge has a happy hour from 4:30-7:30pm, with $4 well drinks, $3 beers, and free appetizers.

Cal vs. UCLA tailgate party - November 4, 2006

PAAC 1st Annual Tailgate: Cal vs. UCLA. On Saturday, November 4, 2006 from 12pm-4pm, PAAC will be hosting it's first Cal Football Tailgate Party and you are all invited!

There will be food, drinks, and fun at a lot near Memorial Stadium (we have a parking pass to the Cal lots that we will use--we will be at the Optometry Lot, right next to the stadium. For $15, alums and their guests will get a full plate of Filipino food (bbq sticks, lumpia, pancit, rice), snacks, UNLIMITED drinks (beer, sangria, etc), and fun (board games, cards, footballs, etc.) Student pricing is only $5!

The Cal vs. UCLA game starts at 5pm. Bluezone tickets are currently sold out, but reserved seats are still available for ~$48 each. Go to http://www.calbears.com to buy your tickets. We can also coordinate with interested individuals to get bluezone or goldzone general admission tickets for ~$50-55 via craigslist (This is more than face value, but this seems to be the going rate for this game).

If you cannot get tickets, alums will also go to the local bars in the area to watch the game.

Pilipino American Career & Networking Symposium - UC Berkeley, CA

Pilipino-American Career & Networking Symposium. On Saturday, October 14, 2006 from 9am-5pm, PASS in collaboration with pre-professional groups P4, PAHC, and PASAE, will be holding the Pilipino-American Career & Networking Symposium on the UC Berkeley. The event is a series of workshops and aims to help students focus on early career planning. PASS needs alumni help with the following:

Attending the workshops and providing personal insight to the material presented by our facilitators
Be a guest facilitator of one of the workshops
Join PASS for lunch or any portion of the symposium to give students an opportunity to meet and network with you.

Cal Homecoming 2006

Cal Homecoming 2006. On Saturday, October 7, 2006 from 12noon-4pm, come join PAA (Pilipino American Alliance), PASAE (Pilipino Association for Scientists, Architects, and Engineers), and PAAC on Upper Sproul Plaza before the Cal vs. Oregon football game!

This is the inaugural year for the 1868 Cal Avenue Homecoming Fair, where various student organizations and alumni groups line Sproul Plaza to welcome back alumni and enjoy the traditional pre-game rally with the Cal Band, UC Rally Committee, Mic Men, Oski, and the Cal Dance Team. PAA and PASAE will be selling filipino food to raise money for upcoming undergraduate events. PAAC members will be helping out as well and to join in the fun.

To improve event and club communications to its members, PAAC is forming a committee of Class Ambassadors to help publicize event information to your friends and classmates. The only “qualification” for a Class Ambassador is that you have kept in touch with a few of your classmates by email or phone. PAAC/CAA Launches the Jesse Ante Achievement Scholarship

PAAC is proud to announce the launch of the PAAC-Jesse Ante Achievement Award. The TAAP fundraising was kicked off on 12/3/05, Jesse's Big 6-OhBirthday and PAAC has initiated and partnered the fundraising efforts to endow the scholarship. Jesse Ante (B.S. Mechanical Engineering 1968; M.S.Mechanical Engineering 1970) is an active alumnus who has served for the California Alumni Association Board of Directors (1999-2003) as well as PAACPresident (1995-97). He continues to remain active with mentorship and scholarship volunteer opportunities for the University. PAAC is seeking toraise $25,000 to endow the scholarship.

This new scholarship will be in addition to PAAC's existing PAAC-Grace Asuncion Achievement Award. The most recent awardee is Jovy Estremos (Class of2007).
